The Deringer’s Adoption Story
The Deringer’s adoption story is one of transformation. In just two years, Cliff and Amy Deringer have transformed their lives and the lives of others through the power of foster care. As licensed foster parents through OhioGuidestone, their foster care and adoption story began with a conversation.
While exploring ways to start a family, Cliff and Amy connected with a foster family who introduced them to the possibility of fostering. That conversation became the catalyst for a remarkable and life-changing path.
Since becoming licensed, Cliff and Amy have had two foster placements, both of which resulted in adoption. Their experience reflects the challenges and joys of foster care, especially as first-time parents navigating the unique needs of children with past trauma.
“The adjustment period was the most challenging part,” they admit, reflecting on the early days of becoming instant parents to older children. “These children had previous experiences that shaped them. Learning to parent them in a way that honored those experiences while also creating new, safe routines was a big transition.”
Not all Adoption Stories Come Without Difficulties
Despite the difficulties, the Deringers have found deep fulfillment in fostering. They say the best part of foster care has been watching their children grow, learn, and heal.

“The best moment was when the kids let their guard down and allowed themselves to be part of our family,” Amy and Cliff shared. Amy recalls the first time the children said “I love you” as a moment that touched her deeply. For Cliff, the memory of them first calling him “Dad” stands out as a defining and emotional milestone. “It took them a while to adjust to having a father figure,” he says, “but when that moment came, it became a core memory I’ll never forget.”
Cliff and Amy are quick to credit their support network for helping them along the way. They strongly recommend working with OhioGuidestone, praising the responsiveness and compassion of their treatment team leader and the agency staff.
“They answered every question we had and stood by us through every step of the process,” they say. “Having that level of support made all the difference.”
Advice from Cliff and Amy
Their advice to prospective foster parents is honest and insightful: “Ask a lot of questions, keep an open mind, and have no expectations.” They also stress the importance of patience and maintaining clear, consistent communication with the treatment team.
Support Beyond Fostering
In addition to full-time fostering, Amy found meaning in providing respite care by offering temporary support for other foster families and children. Initially unsure whether she could handle the emotional toll of seeing children leave, Amy discovered joy in simply being there when it mattered most.
Looking Ahead
The Deringers hope to continue building their family and offering care to more foster children in need. Their journey is one of courage, love, and steadfast dedication—a powerful example of how opening a home can truly change lives.
